1. No sooner had Boaz gone up to the gate and sat down there than the next-of-kin, of whom Boaz had spoken, came passing by. So Boaz said, “Come over, friend; sit down here.” And he went over and sat down.

2. Then Boaz took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, “Sit down here”; so they sat down.

3. He then said to the next-of-kin, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that belonged to our kinsman Elimelech.

4. So I thought I would tell you of it, and say: Buy it in the presence of those sitting here, and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if you will not, tell me, so that I may know; for there is no one prior to you to redeem it, and I come after you.” So he said, “I will redeem it.”

5. Then Boaz said, “The day you acquire the field from the hand of Naomi, you are also acquiring Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the dead man, to maintain the dead man’s name on his inheritance.”

6. At this, the next-of-kin said, “I cannot redeem it for myself without damaging my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”

7. Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one took off a sandal and gave it to the other; this was the manner of attesting in Israel.

8. So when the next-of-kin said to Boaz, “Acquire it for yourself,” he took off his sandal.

9. Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses that I have acquired from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon.

10. I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, the wife of Mahlon, to be my wife, to maintain the dead man’s name on his inheritance, in order that the name of the dead may not be cut off from his kindred and from the gate of his native place; today you are witnesses.”

11. Then all the people who were at the gate, along with the elders, said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your house like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you produce children in Ephrathah and bestow a name in Bethlehem;

12. and, through the children that the Lord will give you by this young woman, may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.” The Genealogy of David

4. मैंने तय किया है कि मैं इस विषय में यहाँ रहने वाले लोगों और अपने लोगों के अग्रजों के सामने तुमसे कहूँ। यदि तुम भूमि को खरीदकर वापस लेना चाहते हो तो खरीद लो! यदि तुम भूमि को ऋणमुक्त करना नहीं चाहते तो मुझे बताओ। मैं जानता हूँ कि तुम्हारे बाद वह व्यक्ति मैं ही हूँ जो भूमि को ऋणमुक्त कर सकता है। यदि तुम भूमि को वापस नहीं खरीदते हो, तो मैं खरीदूँगा।”

5. तब बोअज़ ने कहा, “यदि तुम भूमि नाओमी से खरीदोगे तो तुम्हें मृतक की पत्नी मोआबी स्त्री रूत भी मिलेगी। जब रूत को बच्चा होगा तो वह भूमि उस बच्चे की होगी। इस प्रकार भूमि मृतक के परिवार में ही रहेगी।”

6. निकट सम्बन्धी ने उत्तर दिया, “मैं भूमि को वापस खरीद नहीं सकता। यद्पि यह भूमि मेरी होनी चाहिए थी किन्तु मैं इसे खरीद नहीं सकता। यदि मैं ऐसा करता हूँ, तो मुझे अपनी सम्पत्ति से हाथ धोना पड़ सकता है। इसलिए तुम उस भूमि को खरीद सकते हो।”

7. (इस्राएल में बहुत समय पहले जब कोई व्यक्ति किसी सम्पत्ति को खरीदता या ऋणमुक्त करता था, तो एक व्यक्ति अपने जूते को उतारता था और दूसरे व्यक्ति को दे देता था। यह उनके खरीदने का प्रमाण था।)

8. सो उस निकट सम्बन्धी ने कहा, “भूमि खरीद लो।” तब उस निकट सम्बन्धि ने अपने एक जूते को उतारा और इसे बोअज को दे दिया।

9. तब बोअज़ ने अग्रजों और सभी लोगों से कहा, “आज आप लोग मेरे गवाह हैं कि मैं नाओमी से वे सभी चीज़ें खरीद रहा हूँ जो एलीमेलेक, किल्योन और महलोन की हैं।

10. मैं रूत को भी अपनी पत्नी बनाने के लिये खरीद रहा हूँ। मैं यह इसलिए कर रहा हूँ कि मृतक की सम्पत्ति उसके परिवार के पास ही रहेगी। इस प्रकार मृतक का नाम उसके परिवार और उसकी भूमि से नहीं हटाया जायेगा। आप लोग आज इसके गवाह हैं।”

11. इस प्रकार सभी लोग और अग्रज जो नगर द्वार के समीप थे, गवाह हुए। उन्होंने कहा: यह स्त्री जो तुम्हारे घर जाएगी, यहोवा उसे राहेल और लिआ जैसी करे जिसने इस्राएल वंश को बनाया। हम प्रार्थना करते हैं तुम एप्राता में शक्तिशाली होओ! तुम बेतलेहेम में प्रसिद्ध होओ!

12. जैसे तामार ने यहूदा के पुत्र पेरेस को जन्म दिया और उसका परिवार महान बना। उसी तरह यहोवा तुम्हें भी रूत से कई पुत्र दे और तुम्हारा परिवार भी उसकी तरह महान हो।
